Daniel leaned back.

Daniel said nothing.

“That’s when people become dangerous.”

“Or citizens.”

For the first time since the archive incident, he looked closely at the man standing behind the technicians.
He zoomed in.
Something had changed.
Not in the photograph.
In his understanding of it.
The man was not merely looking toward something outside the frame.
His right hand was raised slightly.
Two fingers extended.

Daniel followed the direction.
The gesture aligned with the edge of the clearing.

Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
She looked down through the structural opening to the floor beneath.
“I want that.”
Daniel smiled.
“You haven’t changed your mind.”
“No.”
“You know the floor isn’t finished.”
“That’s why I’m here.”
The architect unrolled his tracing paper across a temporary worktable.
“We’ve made some preliminary studies.”
Daniel looked at him.
“When?”
“Since our last visit.”
The founder smiled.
“He doesn’t sleep much.”
“I’ve noticed.”
The architect ignored them and began drawing.
“We don’t want to occupy the floor as a conventional tenant.”
“Good.”
“We want to make the floor part of the Treehouse’s environmental architecture.”
Daniel leaned closer.
The architect drew a series of zones.
“Clean laboratory spaces here. Diagnostics here. Recovery and rehabilitation along this edge. Research rooms toward the controlled-service spine. Living and observation spaces where they can take advantage of the natural environment.”
Daniel studied the drawing.
“You’re putting bedrooms inside the guild floor.”
“Some.”
“Why?”
The founder answered.
“Because the people doing long-term work should not have to leave the environment they’re studying every evening.”
She looked at Daniel.
“And because some of us intend to live here.”
There was no sentimentality in the statement.
That made it stronger.
The architect moved another sheet over the first.
This one was less conventional.
The floor had been divided into layers rather than rooms.
Air.

“What’s this?”

Daniel turned.

“In what sense?”
“Everything.”
She smiled at his expression.

Daniel looked at the architect.

“How?”
The architect shrugged.

“Meaning?”
“Measurements stay local unless the participant explicitly authorizes transfer.”
Daniel smiled.

“At length.”
“Good.”

“I think I’ll like it here.”

“How to make enough room for a human life without requiring everything around it to become enormous.”
Daniel considered that.
The city below was full of enormous things.

Vehicles.

Ambitions.
The Treehouse was becoming large without worshipping size.
Its luxury was not square footage.

Access to tools.

Nature.
Movement.
